A MESSAGE FROM MRS MILLER
& MR WILSON
Welcome once again to the school newsletter. This
has been a very busy term with many activities.
Notable events of the term have included trips and
visits and charity events, where the children raised
money for local charities. We also raised just under
£700 for Comic Relief (with an amazing £450 raised
in a cake sale by Jodie Friend of 7Sn!). The children
enjoyed the day, with many fun activities. Thank you
to parents for your support.
As well as events like the above, the normal day to
day routine of the school has supported the efforts of
children to do well in their studies. The children have
worked well this term and have made excellent
progress as you will have seen in your child’s report.
This is an especially busy time for Year 6 preparing
for their SATs and final teacher assessments next
term in only a few weeks! Please encourage your
child to revise for their exams over the holidays and
the weeks before the tests and exams next term. The
teachers will provide as much extra support as
possible prior to the exams and final teacher
assessment, such as special lessons, homework clubs,
additional support and mentoring sessions, all of
which will help prepare the children. Thank you for
your help with this.
As we have explained to the children, now is the time
to put in extra effort so that they can be proud of their
performance after doing so well at Abington. We
look forward to receiving the Key Stage 2 and Year 9
French FCSE results this year as I am sure that the
children will do really well.
It was a real pleasure to meet with parents again
recently at Years 6 and 9 Parents Evenings and Years
7 and 8 Class Tutor Evening. Our parents evenings
are a real success with nearly all parents attending.
This is much appreciated and most important for the
children.
Also this term the Year 9 pupils have been involved
in choosing their 'option choices' for next year. To
help the Year 9 children the school ran a series of
careers lessons to assist in their choices for
the future and special meetings with the Guthlaxton

YEAR 6 SATS EXAMINATIONS 2015
All parents of Year 6 pupils should have received a
letter outlining the support, intervention and revision
programme that is in place for our Year 6 pupils. We
are working extremely hard to prepare them for the
tests and support them to achieve their best. I would
like to thank all parents and carers for their continued
support and would ask them to continue to work
alongside us in the run up to the exams. Your child
should have been provided with a number of revision
booklets and guide books which they should be using
at home. If you have any queries or questions about
your childs attainment and progress please contact us.
The exam dates are as follows and these are set by the
Government so that all Year 6 pupils in the country
will sit their exams on the same day. Therefore it is
of the utmost importance that your child is in school
on these days.

ADMISSIONS
Parents who have applied for their son/daughter to
attend Abington in September will have received
confirmation from County Hall. This information
was provided on 1st March.
These offers follow a busy year of induction for
children from local primary schools who are now
looking forward to continuing their Key Stage 2 work
at Abington. Our colleagues at All Saints, Meadow
and Thythorn schools have worked hard to make the
transition and curriculum continuity a trouble free
process.
Requests for places continue to be made by
parents from other Primary Schools, and any
parent who may still be considering Abington for
the next stage of education should contact me as
soon as possible. If you had expected to hear from
County Hall by now and have not done so please
telephone me at school.

YEAR 9 EXAM WEEK
We are once again running our Year 9 exam week this
year. The aims are to prepare pupils for exam
conditions and also enable teachers to gain further
evidence to support their teacher assessments. The
exams will take place during the week beginning
Monday 1st June. Please encourage your child to
revise and prepare for these exams. I would like to
wish them all the best of luck.

FREE TRIPS AND VISITS
As I have reported to parents before, we, as a school,
subsidise all trips and visits as a matter of policy. The
Governors at the school would like all children to take
part in as many clubs, activities, trips and visits as is
possible in the belief that such activities enhance a
child’s education. To this end many trips and visits
are heavily subsidised to keep prices as low as
possible for parents.
Please encourage your child to enjoy as many trips
and visits as possible. For any parent experiencing
problems at this difficult time in the economy please
contact me at the school if you need some help. Also
if you have any comments on the way we organise
our trips I would like to have your views. Please let
me know.

OPTIONS/UPPER SCHOOL TRANSFER
Parents of pupils in Year 9 will have recently received
confirmation of their next school and the process of
transfer is already under way. Year 9 pupils have
completed their option choices for Guthlaxton.
Option forms and admission forms have been
submitted to Guthlaxton.
Pastoral liaison is due to begin at the start of May but
some pupils may be involved in induction procedures
before then. We will notify parents if their child is to
be considered in an early induction process.
Hopefully all Year 9 pupils now have confirmation of
their new school but should anyone be encountering
difficulties, please contact me at school.

TEXT SERVICE/E-MAIL
The school uses a text service to get in touch with
parents when a lot of parents need contacting at once,
e.g. if the school is to close for bad weather. If you
have not already done so can you please let the office
have your up to date mobile numbers so that you will
receive texts promptly.
In an attempt to reduce the amount of paper used, the
school is using e-mails to distribute newsletters, etc.

for parents seems to be continuing to work well and

SCHOOL PLACES
On March 1st every parent in the country should have
confirmation about where their child will go to school
next year if they are due to transfer schools. To all
those parents who are successful in gaining a place at
Abington, welcome to our school community and we
look forward to working with you over the coming
year. Please be aware that a member of Abington’s
senior team will have attended all feeder primary
schools’ Parents Evenings this term. Next term the
induction process continue and we look forward to
welcoming all the new children to the school.

BIRKETT HOUSE SCHOOL
As a goodwill gesture there has been a long-standing
agreement that pupils from our school can use this site
as a short-cut on the way to and from school.
However as part of this agreement they politely
request the following:
Pupils need to walk through the car park safely, being
aware that cars have the right of way.
Pupils should be vigilant at the numerous minibuses,
not running in-between them or on the far side of
parked cars.
To be aware that lessons continue until 3.30 pm. The
car park should not be used as a drop-off zone, from
which pupils walk to school.
Pupils should not ride their bikes through their school.
We would be very grateful if you could reinforce
these points with your child/children if they use this
short-cut through Birkett House School.

E SAFETY
I would like to remind parents of the problems that
internet use may cause your children. Over this term
there have been incidents of falling out between
children because of the use of social networking sites.
I am sure that you monitor the use of the internet by
your children, but you may wish to talk to your child
again about safe use of the internet. We will continue
to do this at school as part of ICT lessons and
assemblies.

MOBILE PHONES As stated in the pupil planner, pupils are not normally
allowed to bring mobile phones into school.
However, if there is a valid reason why a pupil must
have their phone in school, we ask parents to write a
letter to explain the reasons. Pupils can then leave
their phones in a box in the school office for the
duration of the day. Pupils obviously leave their
phones there at their own risk and whilst office staff
will do their utmost to ensure that pupils do so with
care, unfortunately the school cannot be held
responsible for any damage caused.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
I have been asked by a few parents recently to reissue
the information concerning school uniform. They
asked me to do this to save any confusion when they
buy new uniform, particularly school
cardigans/jumpers. I am happy to do this and have
printed the uniform list below:
 Black blazer with Abington school badge
 Plain white blouse or shirt
 Plain grey or black school skirt or trousers
(traditional design standard length skirt, no jean
style trousers)
 School tie (optional for girls)
 Plain black shoes (not trainers)
 A plain grey or black V-necked jumper, or a plain
black or grey cardigan, may be worn in addition to
(but not instead of) the black blazer with school
badge.
Please see page 19 of the planner for full details. All
items of clothing should be marked with the owner’s
name
We would also be grateful if parents would ensure
that their child comes to school with the necessary
equipment like pens, pencils, rulers, etc.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Parents are not always aware that they are entitled to
claim free school meals for their child. With an
allowance of £2.30 per day this could mean a saving
of over £400 per child. For this the children can
either have a cold snack (e.g. sandwiches) or a hot
dinner, and a drink or pudding. The menu changes
daily with hot dinners including roasts, pasta, curry
and cottage pie. County Hall will now ask you to
verify you are eligible for FSM every couple of
months. Please ensure you reply promptly to this
request as failure to do so will result in your child not
being allowed a free school meal. County Hall will
assume that if you do not verify you are no longer
eligible. If you receive Income Support or Income
based Job Seekers Allowance you are likely to be
eligible. For further details please see Abington
Academy website where you can download an
application form or telephone 0116 3056588 to apply.
Your child need not feel self-conscious about being
on free school meals – nobody knows other than the
office staff. The £2.30 is automatically put onto the
childs finger daily and the child pays as normal
through the till.

INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE
Some of our brightest Year 9 mathematicians took
part in this year’s UKMT Intermediate Maths
Challenge. Over 200,000 pupils aged 13-16 took part
from right across the UK.
Roughly the top 6% receive a gold certificate, the
next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. This year’s
group have done very well with five pupils receiving
bronze awards and one getting gold and qualifying for
the next round in the competition.
The bronze certificates go to Adam Lilley 9Sd,
Morgan Pettifer 9Sd, Sophie Calverley 9Sw,
Harry Evans 9Sd and Joshua Murray 9Pl.
The gold certificate goes to Georgia Norman.
Congratulations!
A very well done to all who took part.
Year 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to take part in
the Junior Maths Challenge at the end of April.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
This has been a very successful term in the Science
Department; with the Year 7 S half students enjoying
their ELD at Twycross Zoo and some of our Year 8
and Year 9 students having an amazing time at the
Big Bang Fair.
We are also had a tree planting session on Saturday
21st March. This was the second wave of the 60 Trees
to Celebrate 60 years at Abington.
Within the Science Department students are working
well with our new homework booklet initiative, this is
really helping to promote independence with our
students. Any pupils who need help can always come
to our Tuesday lunchtime homework help session in
S1 from 12.30 onwards.
Our Science Club on Wednesday lunchtimes at 12.30
is great fun and we have a good group of students
working on our STEM 'Marble run' challenge. Any
Year 7-9 students are welcome; please see Miss Higgs
for a priority lunch card.
Finally, preparation is now underway for our end of
year exams. Our Year 9 students will soon be
completing their last GCSE Biology module and
revision will start soon in lessons ready for the June
exam week.
Year 7 and 8 students will also be completing an end
of year exam. It would be a good idea for students to
chat to their teachers and to start to revise in
preparation for this.
Well done so far this year everybody - keep up the
hard work.

SHINE A LIGHT CONFERENCE
On Wednesday 23rd February, Abington pupils joined
with Bushloe and other neighbouring schools in
participating in a pupil led conference about working
as communities and inspiring people. Our pupils
delivered a speech outlining the staggering amount of
charity work that we undertake every year and had the
opportunity to listen to keynote speakers such as Matt
Hampson.

HISTORY NEWS
We are excitedly preparing for our visit to the Black
Country Museum on 20th May. Letters have been
given out and the deadline for the returns is April 17th;
these should be sent to your child’s History Teacher.
Our Year 9 History booster sessions are underway
now and are targeting the pupils who are studying
History GCSE and are currently aiming to achieve
Level 7 in the subject this year. These sessions run on
Wednesday evenings until 4.00 pm.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
On the evening of Monday 26th January, Mr Allen
from Abington Academy and Mr Manton from
Bushloe High School took 5 pupils to represent the
schools at a Holocaust Memorial event in Wigston.
The event was held at the Peace Memorial Park in
Wigston and the schools were invited to give readings
about the Holocaust. Tillie-May Cosgrove and Harry
Evans of 9Sd volunteered to represent the school and
read beautifully. Both pupils read individual readings
about the Holocaust, ‘A Cartload of Shoes’ and ‘I
Keep Forgetting’, and then finished jointly with ‘We
Remember Them’. Tillie-May and Harry were
fantastic ambassadors for the school and excellently
recited their readings. A big thank you goes out to the
pupils for giving up their own time to participate in
this important event.
It is important to study the atrocities of the Holocaust
and other genocides so they will be remembered. This
is why Abington welcomed a Holocaust survivor to
give a talk to Year 9 pupils about his experiences and
why we participated in the memorial event. As well as
this, all years within the school had lessons dedicated
to the Holocaust for pupils to engage in different
activities to widen their knowledge of the Holocaust
and to understand the tragic events.

FRENCH ELD
On Tuesday 10th March pupils in 7R experienced a
French day. The morning started off with a
traditional French breakfast. The dining hall was
brightly decorated with French flags and banners.
Using their French, pupils managed to come up to the
breakfast counter and order croissants, pains au
chocolat, French bread and a drink of their choice.
Many thanks go to Mrs Dunn and the other ladies in
the kitchen for preparing all of this for us. Pupils
spent the rest of the day completing various activities

all based on a sporting theme. The day was very
enjoyable and we look forward to welcoming 7S to a
similar day in May.

CHOIR
The Choir meets every Tuesday at lunchtime
12.05pm. It is great to see so many Year 6 pupils
supporting this. I realise some pupils cannot always
attend but they can still come along even if they have
missed a session. We have been preparing for a
performance at the Abington Allstars which was held
on Thursday 12th March. Pupils sang the song
Believe which was beautifully performed and with so
much feeling. Thank you to all who took part.

ORCHESTRA
Pupils from all years have continued to attend if they
are grade 2 and above. In addition to preparing for a
concert in the summer term, pupils performed “Can
You Feel the Love Tonight” at the recent Allstars
concert.
The second Family of Schools orchestra session took
place on Wednesday 18th March at Guthlaxton. This
session was for pupils who have just taken up
instruments and are grade 2 and below. It was great to
have 28 pupils, along with Bushloe students,
performing two pieces by the end of the session. It
was a challenging but very rewarding morning. These
pupils will be included in the final Orchestra Day, for
all musicians, in early June. This will be followed by
a concert, where we welcome parents and family.

PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS
It is very satisfying to see a number of pupils
requesting lessons following a number of
instrumental sessions which were set up at the
beginning of September at lunchtimes. The
commitment of these pupils in attending sessions has
been superb.
Lesson availability – it is never too late to start. There
are spaces in some instruments. Please contact me if
interested.
We have a number of available instruments (to hire)
for any pupils interested in starting lessons. I am
happy to organise a taster session on any of these
instruments before any decisions are made.
Instruments are :-trumpets, French horn, trombone,
clarinets, saxophones, cellos and double bass.

During the February half-term a group of year 8
and 9 boys attended a composing workshop with
the composer John Webb. They will now be
involved with the Philharmonia Orchestra in a
weekend course in preparation for a performance at
De Montfort Hall on Saturday 18th April.

ABINGTON ALLSTARTS – 12TH MARCH
A team of Year 8 and 9 pupils who have strengths
in Drama and Music organised this event which
showcased an amazing group of talented pupils. Their
hard work in putting this together was clearly shown
in the performance to a packed hall. The standard of
the singing, dancing, street running, instrumentalist
and a superb finale by the committee were enjoyed by
family and friends. Many thanks to all the committee
and such a successful event.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS – SUMMER TERM
A number of pupils will again be involved in this
event. Pupils have put themselves forward for this and
will have a couple of free sessions with Tom Wright
our resident guitar tutor. There is a great deal of talent
and I hope your child has seen me if interested. The
sessions will start straight after the Easter break.

DONATION OF A PIANO
We have been lucky enough to have had a piano
donated by Blaby Stokes Primary School. We are
very grateful for this as one of our existing pianos
was unrepairable.

SCHOOL COUNCIL
The School Council held a cake sale this term, raising
£81, which was a great effort from all those involved.
This money has been put towards a time capsule
which is to be buried within the school grounds to
commemorate 60 years at Abington Academy.
Some of the School Council also had the opportunity
to visit The Houses of Parliament with pupils from
Bushloe High School, which was a very interesting
and fascinating experience.

ELD IN EXCEL
We take every opportunity in Excel to work on life
skills. This half term, Excel students worked on some
of their skills by making chocolates and cushions for
Mothers Day.
Chase made some rocky road chocolates which
everyone in Excel tried (just to make sure they were
nice enough to take home for mum of course!) - very
delicious and he made a great job of washing up. He
then designed and hand sewed a lovely little cushion.

Year 6 Netball (High 5)
Well done to all the girls who have been attending practice every Tuesday. We would
love to see more getting involved. We have been practising hard and getting prepared
for the Oadby and Wigston High 5 Netball Tournament on Wednesday 29th April at South
Wigston High School. We will hopefully be entering two teams into the tournament and I
wish all the girls lots of luck and hope they enjoy their first Netball Tournament.
Year 8 Netball Tournament – Thursday 5th February
Well done to Millie French 8Pt, Olivia Knight 8Pt, Chloe Hull 8Pt, Aleyah White 8Ln, Hollie
Hayden 8Ln, Ella Foster 8Ln, Ruby Dixon 8Ln, Lia Young 8Kh and Niamh Taylor 8Hg. The
girls played in freezing temperatures, hail and wind! Some very close matches, with the
girls managing 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses, which were very close. I was so proud of all of
your efforts and determination in horrible weather conditions. Thanks to Miss Lloyd for her
help.
Year 7 Netball Tournament – Thursday 26th February
Well done to Ella McMahon 7Sn, Amelia McMahon 7Sn, Alice Snow 7Sn,
Amber Lewis-Phelps 7Sn, Emily Sharpe 7Gr, Chelsea Knibbs 7Dl, Olivia Scobie 7Dl,
Ella Ball 7Dl and Paige Bull 7Dl! It was a great tournament with some very close matches.
Similar to the Year 8 Netball team, they also managed 1 win, 1 draw and 2 very close
games were lost. A great team effort and Ella McMahon was chosen as the player of
the tournament for Abington. Well done! Thanks to Miss Williamson for helping.
Year 6 Gymnastics Club – Monday 3.15 – 4.15 pm
This year we have been able to continue funding the Gymnastics Club with our coach
Rebecca Kirton from Oadby Gymnastics Club. The uptake since it started in September
has been good. I would like to see more Year 6 boys involved as well.
Dance Clubs
Dance clubs this term are on Monday 12.05 – 12.30 pm for all years and afterschool on
Thursday from 3.15 – 4.15 pm with Candice. If you are interested in taking part please
see Candice, everyone is welcome. Thanks to Candice for all her hard work so far.
It was fantastic to enter the first ‘fixtures Live Dance Competition’ held at Countesthorpe
College on Monday 26th January 2015. Candice, our dance teacher, helped the pupils
to enter all categories (solo, duet, trio and groups) with some fantastic choreography.
Miss Donnelly kindly helped with the competition and although the girls didn’t win the
group dance was spectacular! The dances were also seen in the Allstars show held in
March.

Badminton
The U14 boys and girls teams have had a really good season this year. The girls U14
team came 3rd in their league, winning 3 matches, drawing 1 and losing 1. The U14 boys
also came 3rd, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2. A very good season and well done to

Badminton Club continues on a Wednesday after school from 3.15 to 4.15 pm until the
end of the summer term.

Dance Leaders (Year 8)
Over 20 pupils have taken part in 7 hours of training in order to become a Dance
Leader. All pupils involved enjoyed themselves and have developed excellent
leadership skills. Some pupils have already put these skills to good use during the Primary
Dance sessions which were hosted at Abington. They will have the opportunity to
volunteer and support Candice Matthew during her Dance Clubs.
Abington Family of Schools
The following events have taken place or will take place to support out feeder schools.
 Year 1 Multi-Skills –multi-skills sessions for all Year 1’s were delivered by Year 9 pupils.
Asdan pupils in conjunction with other Year 9’s trained as sports leaders to deliver
these sessions. This was a big event and one that was thoroughly enjoyed by both
Year 1 and Sports Leaders.
 T-Ball Training – sports leaders will be trained to teach and organise Year 2 pupils to
play T-Ball. This is a valuable opportunity for leaders to gain hands-on experience
of leading younger pupils.
 Year 3/4/5 Primary Sports Day – this is an annual event where all our feeder Primary
Schools come and take part in an Athletics competition. Sports Leaders again will
be responsible for organising and judging events.
Wheelchair Basketball
10 pupils were invited to attend an inclusive event hosted by Gartree High School on
Monday 10th March. They were taught how to play wheelchair basketball. Everyone
had a fantastic time. Three of our pupils have been selected to represent Oadby and
Wigston in the forthcoming school games.

Indoor Rowing
In January, 8 pupils from Year 9 took part in the South Leicestershire Indoor Rowing
competition at South Wigston High School. The pupils had to compete in team and
individual events. All the pupils put in fantastic effort and were a credit to the school on
the day. A special mention to Joshua Atkinson 9Sr who got a bronze medal for his
individual race. Well done all.

Year 7 Boys 5-a-side Football
January was also a busy and very successful month for the Year 7 5-a-side team. They
played in the local Oadby and Wigston Qualifying Tournament and finished an
impressive 2nd, meaning they went on to the County Finals at Kibworth.
Second time around they went a step further and thanks to some very impressive
performances by the whole squad they managed to win the tournament to become
COUNTY CHAMPIONS!
This meant they travelled to the Soccer Dome at Derby’s Pride Park for the Regional
Finals. Once again the boys performed brilliantly but due to having little luck on the day
just missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals by 1 point.
Although the boys were disappointed it was still a great run and to be crowned County
Champions was a fantastic achievement…very well done boys!
Year 7 & 8 Indoor Athletics
In early February, 26 pupils from Year 7 & 8 travelled to Beauchamp to take part in the
Oadby and Wigston Indoor Athletics Championships.
Both the year teams put in some excellent performances, particularly on the track, with
several first place finishes. The Year 7 team dominated all the relays as well as some
good finishes in the individual events.
Unfortunately, these results were not quite enough on the day. The Year 8 teams finished
3rd (Boys) and 5th (girls). The Year 7 teams both missed out narrowly on top spot finishing
2nd overall.
A big well done and congratulations to all the pupils involved.
Year 7 Girl’s Football
In late February, the Year 7 Girls team were in action again against Leysland in the
National Cup. After a slow start the girls found themselves 3-0 down at half time. Despite
a spirited second half performance, the girls couldn’t quite get themselves into the
match, with the final result being 4-2.
A couple of weeks later the girls had a chance at some revenge when they faced the
same opposition in the Area Final. A much better performance from the girls saw them
absolutely dominate the match from start to finish but unfortunately they couldn’t make
the pressure count and missed a lot of good chances. The match finished 1-1 in normal
time and so it was into extra time.
Again the girls played brilliantly and had all the possession and chances but couldn’t
quite find the winner. And so the match went to penalties. It wasn’t to be our girls day as
they unluckily lost 3-1 on penalties.
An excellent performance and one the girls should be proud of – and being the second
best team in the Area is also a great achievement. Well done girls!

Oadby & Wigston Borough Council ‘Letterbox’ Spring 2015
Community Matters Pupil Conference
On behalf of Learning South Leicestershire, Bushloe High School organised an amazing ‘Community Matters’ event recently at
Leicester South Salvation Army where pupils from Bushloe, Abington, Guthlaxton, Welland, South Leicester College, Manor
High School, Robert Smyth and Countesthorpe Upper school attended a full day of workshops and pupil lead presentations.
Pupils from Bushloe, Abington, Robert Smyth and Manor all took the lead in presenting to the audience of students across the
schools and years.
The object of the day was for the students to share good practice and promote positive community links to show the work the
schools are doing. The programme was set to inspire pupils to get involved in Outward Facing work of schools within their
communities and to develop pupils’ confidence and leadership skills.
Key Organiser, Ms Pancholi, Bushloe High School said “The Learning South Leicestershire schools have benefitted from the
opportunity to take part in pupils presentations, sharing examples of work in their schools, enabling other schools to develop
these projects to have a positive impact on their communities.”
Mrs Webster, Co-Head Teacher at Bushloe, who opened the conference, quoted “The conference is a great way for pupils across
schools to grow in their confidence and leadership skills; to celebrate what they do and give them a ‘Time to Shine’.”
Matt Hampson (Ex Rugby Player and founder of the Matt Hampson Foundation) was also a key Speaker and the students were
overwhelmed with his positive outlook on life.
Ashleigh Gibby, Year 12 at Guthlaxton College said “Matt’s speech was truly inspirational and really inspired me to appreciate
what I have and to achieve my goals.”
Harry Redfern, Year 9 at Abington also said “Matt Hampson is a huge role model. Despite all he has been through he still keeps
happy. He is truly inspirational and I look up to him.”
The students and staff who attended came away from the day feeling inspired for their futures with challenges to nurture their
positivity through a range of avenues in their schools and wider communities.
