_________________________________________________________________________
Over the past two weeks we have seen our year 12 students celebrate their last days
of formal classes. We had a great day last Tuesday for the tee-shirt signing day,
which was followed by Celebration Day on Wednesday. I loved seeing all the students arrive at school dressed up as, (in some cases), their alter egos, or just dressing
up for fun. We joined them for a huge breakfast in the cafeteria, followed by a
group photo and a fantastic farewell assembly. The School Captains and SRC President organised and ran the assembly and we were treated to various performances
by this talented cohort of students. It was a very enjoyable day.
As I write this newsletter article, our year 12 students are smack-bang in the middle
of their end of year exams. We can only hope that all the hard work put in by our
students and teachers is enough to get each student the score they need to gain a
place in their chosen course at tertiary level. I wish you all well and look forward to
seeing you all at Graduation.
Changes in our Leadership Team
I announced in the September newsletter that Mrs Zagorski, our Senior School Principal and Assistant Principal, is retiring at the end of the year. I then announced the
subsequent appointment of Mr Roger Centofanti as one of our three Assistant Principals. I would now like to let you know of the changing roles within the Principal
Team at Gladstone Park. In 2015, Mr Keenan will take on the role of Senior School
Principal, Mr Centofanti will become the Middle School Principal and Ms Hoy will
remain the Junior School Principal.
These announcements have been made to the student body at the various year level assemblies.
I wish Mr Keenan and Mr Centofanti well in their new roles - for Ms Hoy it is business as usual.

Year 10 Geography Excursion
Eureka Sky deck and Melbourne Town hall
On Wednesday the 22nd of October, Year 10 Geography classes went to the city to explore and learn about
the development and history of Melbourne, We completed worksheet, learning so much about the Eureka
sky deck . Facts we did not know before included, its weight being the same as 40 000 elephants and that it
had 89 floors. When were at the top, it was pretty overwhelming to be so high above ground level. But at the
same time, it was a beautiful too see the whole city.
After that, we went to the Melbourne Town Hall, split into groups to be taken on tour. Our guides showed us
the places where meetings were held, where Her Majesty the Queen ate and where the mayor of Melbourne
kept office. We were also told about how the Town Hall caught fire. The Melbourne crest was not approved
for over 10 years and you cannot find the new emblem anywhere in the city except for the carpet in the
Town Hall. Just for fun:- We enjoyed standing on the Balcony from which The Beetles waved to the screaming fans , below, in Swanston Street.
Overall it was a great experience and would recommend it for next year. Special thank you to Ms Sneddon
and Ms Hatzimanolis for making this excursion possible.

Medieval Day
Medieval Day involved all Year 8 students and was about people in medieval times- how they dressed, the
weapons they used and the music and entertainment they enjoyed. We went to different activities throughout the day. They all helped our understanding of the medieval period for our studies of History. The session
on the type of clothing in medieval times was very interesting. Just as we have fashion trends today, the people followed fashion back then as well. The clothing that they wore separated the rich from the poor. During
the presentation on weapons, one student dressed up in chain mail and it weighed him down. Everyone enjoyed listening to the medieval music instruments and we were all impressed about how many instruments
the presenter could actually play. Playing medieval games was also fun and challenging. The highlight of the
day was when we did the shield work. We got split into groups with each having a different role to play.
There was a group that built a shield wall and their aim was to cross the line at the end of the field. Two of
the groups were joined together to throw tennis balls at the people in the shield wall. We were told to throw
the balls as hard as we could and to have as much fun as possible.
The day was special because it was a different way of learning. We actually experienced life in medieval
times. Whilst having fun, we were also learning a lot of information. We gained a lot of knowledge about the
medieval period and this knowledge will help us in the future.
We recommend this incursion to future Year 8 students because it is a day filled with fun and learning.
Some comments on Medieval Day:
“The day was so much fun and I went home with more understanding of medieval times.”
“The performers were interesting and brought medieval history alive for the students.”
“This was a unique way of learning.”
“This was better than doing normal bookwork, using textbooks and researching topics on the computer.”

Year 10 Architectural VCD Excursion
Year 10 students recently experienced an 'Urban Scrawl' Melbourne Architectural walking tour. Students
gained a great deal of insight into Melbourne Architecture, cultural and historical information on our city.
The tour guide was thoroughly engaging, knowledgeable and interesting giving us all an insight into details of
Melbourne we were not aware of!
Preconceived ideas were challenged and students left wanted to know more and are provided with the tools
to further explore Architecture in Melbourne on their own.

went off as classes to visit the exhibition. The exhibits 7A and H saw were
the Science and Life exhibit, the
Rainforest, Dinosaurs and the Melbourne History. After seeing most of
the exhibits, 7A then walked around
the World heritage sight and saw
parts of the Greek column statues.
We then got to enjoy lunch outside
the museum in the Fitzroy gardens.
Both 7A and H had a great time and

Melbourne Museum Visit cont...
Throughout terms 2 and 3 all year 7 classes had to design
a bop board on a country of their choice. This year 7A was
lucky enough to have won the year 7 bob board challenge
along with 7H. Our prize was a trip to the Melbourne museum and IMAX on the 7-10-14. When we arrived to IMAX
it was pouring down so we quickly ran for cover and waited until the movie was about to start. We watched a documentary about the human body and have learnt many
things. After IMAX we went to The Melbourne Museum
and was split into groups and walked around. The Melbourne Museum had a lot of exhibitions and opportunities
for us to learn more about animals, insects, dinosaurs and
many more, about an hour later we decided to walk
around the world heritage building and saw the columns
had lunch together as a class and then went onto the bus
again and returned back to school.
WRITTEN BY CHARLY AND LAPRINCIA OF 7A
On the 7th of October 7A and 7H went to the
Melbourne museum and IMAX for winning the
diversity week bop board. All the different year 7’s
created a bop board about a certain country and we
had done Greece and also our humanities teacher Mrs Mary
Christofidis had taught us the Greek alphabet which we performed.
We reached the IMAX centre to watch a movie about the
human body. It was about what changes our bodies go
through various stages of life.
After the movie both classes went to the museum and split
into groups but later reunited with everyone since we had
to learn and explore with our peers. The exhibitions were
dinosaurs, animals, mind control, different illusions also
with funny circus mirrors and Melbourne history.
While we were waiting for 7H we explored the old exhibition building to see if we could spot the ancient Greek columns only to find them out the front of the building.

Student Writing Competition 2014
Transport Accident Commission – Student writing competition 2014
Each year, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) runs a student writing/design competition with the purpose
of encouraging deeper reflection and thinking on the issues surrounding road trauma, safety and peer
relationships. A study undertaken by Monash University and Deakin University entitled ‘What a great night!’
revealed that alcohol consumption is a central feature of Australian culture and identity, particularly in young
people. Many young people frame their drinking experiences in a positive light, despite the very real negative
consequences of alcohol consumption. Drink driving is one of the biggest killers on Victoria’s roads with almost a
quarter of all fatal crashes in Victoria involving a driver or rider with an illegal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC).
Felicia Bongiovanni (Year 11) won first place for the best piece of writing by a VCE or VCAL student at a
metropolitan secondary school. She was awarded a $200 voucher for driving lessons and a $50 book voucher.
Felicia’s writing piece will be published on the TAC website.
Tugce Ayata (Year 11) and Taylah Doorbar (Year 11) both received a Commendation. They were each awarded a
$50 book voucher.
Congratulations!
