ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — Orange
Coast Lodge 786 celebrated with our annual
Christmas party Dec. 14, 2013, at a very
nice clubhouse in the community of Laguna
Woods, where several of our members reside.
The day started with some members arriving early to decorate the large dining room
with tablecloths and fresh red cyclamen, and
get the ovens going with what would later
be a delicious buffet dinner. Appetizers and
beverages were set out as many platters of
goodies arrived along with members and
guests.
After greeting each other, it was time to
start our business meeting. We have been
holding our election of officers, as well as
setting most of the dates for the coming year,
at this meeting so that more folks can have
input on these important matters. There was
only one change in the officers for the coming year as Paul Jensen resigned for health
reasons. Natalie Mlakar Imhof agreed to
take that office, and we are happy to have a
young adult take over that important role.
Meetings for the year were tentatively set.
Our January meeting will be held Sunday,

• SNPJ 30th National Convention •
First meeting of new year
scheduled for Lodge 31
PERIODICAL MATERIAL
In accordance with the SNPJ bylaws, the 30th Regular SNPJ Convention will be held this year. The
convention is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Society bylaws require that delegates be elected in the months of March or April at a regular or
special Lodge meeting. Detailed instructions are furnished to the Lodges.
All Lodge mergers for the 30th convention must be completed no later than March 1, 2014. Additional
information appears below:
Lodges with less than 75 adult members may
merge/unite, but must do so prior to March 1, 2014.
Sec. 2. Number of Delegates and Alternates. Each Lodge having seventy-five (75) or more members
in good standing as of December 31 of the year prior to the election of delegates to the convention
of the National Legislative Body shall be entitled to one delegate; each Lodge having two hundred
fifty (250) or more members in good standing shall be entitled to two delegates; each Lodge having
four hundred fifty (450) or more members in good standing shall be entitled to three delegates; each
Lodge having six hundred fifty (650) or more members in good standing shall be entitled to four
delegates; each Lodge having eight hundred fifty (850) or more members in good standing shall be
entitled to five delegates; each Lodge having one thousand fifty (1,050) or more members in good
standing shall be entitled to six delegates; and each Lodge having one thousand two hundred fifty
(1,250) or more members in good standing shall be entitled to seven delegates; but no Lodge shall
have more than seven delegates.
Two or more Lodges having less than seventy-five (75) members each, but whose combined membership shall be seventy-five (75) or more, may unite to elect a delegate, but no combination of Lodges
shall be entitled to more than one delegate.
Lodges shall elect at least an equal number of alternates to their delegate or delegates. If the
delegate(s) or alternates cannot attend, then the Lodge shall forfeit its rights to representation at the
convention. Alternates shall be elected on a basis of order of succession. The first elected alternate is
alternate to all delegates and will replace any one delegate who cannot attend the convention. If the
first elected alternate becomes a delegate, the second alternate is next in line to succeed the next
vacancy in the delegation. Subsequent vacancies shall be handled in the same manner. In balloting
for alternates, the first alternate shall be the candidate to receive a majority and a greater number
over the majority of votes cast. Each succeeding alternate shall be elected in a similar manner.
Sec. 3. Nomination and Election of Delegates and Alternates. Nomination and election of delegates and alternates to the regular convention of the National Legislative Body shall be held at a
regular or special meeting of the Lodges to take place no earlier than the first day of the month five
(5) months prior to the month of the convention and ending no later than the last day of the month
four (4) months prior to the convention.
Nomination and election of delegates and alternates to a special convention of the National Legislative Body shall be held during a period fixed by the Executive Committee.
Any member who is qualified may be nominated for delegate and/or alternate whether present
at the meeting or not, provided valid reason is presented for the absence. Election of delegates
and alternates shall be by ballot. The ballot shall contain the names of all those who accepted the
nomination and who possess the requisite qualifications for delegates. The president of the Lodge
shall appoint three (3) members as tellers for the election, none of whom are candidates for either
delegates or alternates. Each delegate and alternate must receive a majority of votes cast to be

Year-end fun for Lodge 781
by DOROTHY GRMEK
Lodge 781 Secretary/Treasurer
AVON, Ohio — Lodge 781 members
closed the year with a brunch at the
Orchid Cafe in the Miller Nature
Preserve in Avon. We held our regular
annual meeting after the meal. The
current officers were re-elected to
serve for another year, and donations
were approved for the SNPJ Scholarship Fund and the Slovene Home for
the Aged.
Following the meeting, members
toured the conservatory, which was
beautifully decorated with plants not
native to our area, and the displays were
interspersed with holiday decorations.
There were 13 adults and five
children in attendance. Gift bags were
distributed to the adults, and toys were
given to the children. Everyone enjoyed
the day and we are looking forward to
another activity at this location in the
summer.

The holiday season leads to a
new year for Lodge 786 members
LODGE 786 HOLIDAY
FROM PAGE 1
Jan. 12, beginning at 1 p.m. at the home
of Lina Kerwick, one of our newest
members. Lina and her husband Tony
live in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and
we appreciate their offer to host our very
first meeting of the year. Shortly after
the Jan. 12 meeting, a 2014 calendar
of meetings and events will be sent to
those who have indicated an interest in
what we do.
While the meeting was going on,
Teresa Koci kept the youngsters busy
with the coloring contest for The Voice
of Youth. They also did some creative
drawing, followed by the singing of a
few Christmas carols. Santa had a bit of
confusion in finding the right door while
listening for the children, but needless
to say, he arrived with a round of applause and a cheery “Ho, ho, ho!” The
kids were so happy to see his familiar
face again!
Arnie served as the elf this year, and
Teresa helped hand out the extra goodies. Almost all the kids sat on Santa’s
lap, and lots of cameras were flashing
(maybe even some video, too.) Alenka
was so happy with her tea set that she
carried it around for the rest of the
afternoon. Good job, Santa!
By this time, everyone was pretty
hungry. The table was laden with beef
brisket, baked ham, breads, salads,
baked beans, roasted potatoes and
several delicious vegetable dishes. Of
course, it wouldn't be a party without
tasty desserts! Thanks to all who
brought such delicious things to add to
the main course, which was provided
by the Lodge. Many guests also added
to the wine and soft drink table.
Numerous door prizes were awarded; many thanks to those who donated.
A special thank you goes out to our
loyal musicians who accompanied the
children while they sang and continued
to entertain us during the afternoon.
Don Milek, Chuck Blasick, Bob Patocka
and Fred Mlakar – you are very much
appreciated by all!
Thanks to those who traveled longer
distances to be with us. Traveling isn’t an
easy thing on our California freeways,
especially during this busy season.
I hope everyone had a nice Christmas
and that the new year will be special!

Election of convention

DELEGATE ELECTIONS
FROM PAGE 1
candidate has received a majority of votes cast, the candidate with
the least number of votes shall be removed from the ballot until such
time as someone receives a majority of votes cast. After a delegate
(or alternate) has been elected, voting shall continue, with all previous
candidates (including the person or persons who have been removed
from the ballot) being eligible for election. This procedure shall continue
until all positions have been filled. All delegates and alternates of a Lodge
shall be nominated and elected at the same meeting.
Lodges which merge to attain the required number of members to qualify
for election of a delegate shall do so no later than five (5) months prior to
the National Convention and notify the National President of the merger
no later than fifteen (15) days thereafter. Lodges which find it difficult to
merge may apply to the Executive Committee for assistance. Election
shall be held at a combined meeting of the merged Lodges. The Executive
Committee, with the assistance of the Regional Vice Presidents, shall
be responsible for mergers. Where it is impractical because of distance
between Lodges, the election shall be held separately, in which case
the local Lodges shall, prior to the election, agree upon which person
will be the delegate.
Within ten (10) days after the election of delegates and alternates, the
local Lodge shall certify to the National Secretary the names and addresses of the delegates and alternates so elected. The National Secretary shall publish the names and addresses of the elected delegates
and alternates in the official publication of the Society. Publication of
such list will be printed three (3) to six (6) weeks prior to the convention.
Home Office members (Lodge 800) will be represented by the National
President and National Secretary, who shall not have any additional
voting rights. The National Treasurer shall serve as the alternate.
Sec. 4. Qualifications of Delegates and Alternates. A member, not
below the age of 18 at the time of election, shall be eligible as a delegate
or alternate to a regular or special convention of the National Legislative
Body who has been a member of the Society at least two years and
a member of his Lodge at least one year in the month of the election,
except members of new Lodges in existence at least four (4) months and
members of Lodges terminated by merger or dissolution. A member who
is not in good standing shall not be qualified as a delegate or alternate,
nor shall a member be qualified for delegate or alternate who has not
attended at least 50% of the regular Lodge meetings in the twelve (12)
months prior to the election of delegates to the National Convention
and signed his or her name in the Lodge attendance book which shall
be a bound ledger. Any member who has been found guilty of fraud
or embezzlement by any fraternal society or any Lodge thereof, or by
any court at any time, or who is a representative of any life insurance
company, or any Personal Producing General Agent or sub-agent of the
Society, or who is a member of the National Board of any other fraternal
or mutual benefit society, shall not be eligible as a delegate or alternate.
In any Lodge entitled to more than one delegate, the Lodge secretary shall
have the option to become automatically a delegate to the convention,
provided that he or she has served as secretary of the Lodge twelve
(12) months prior to the convention year considering up to January
31 as the first month, and that he or she meet the requirements for
convention delegates.
(SNPJ Constitution, Bylaws and Resolutions, 2011-2014.
The Society Bylaws are available upon request.)
In order to assist our Lodges with less than 75 members in finding a
suitable Lodge or Lodges with which they may merge/unite, we will
publish the Lodge numbers and the adult membership of each Lodge with
less than 75 members in the next issue of PROSVETA. Lodges which
find it difficult to merge/unite may apply to the Executive Committee for
assistance. It is requested that Lodges which merge to elect a delegate
report immediately thereafter of such merger to the National President,
stating the Lodges involved in the merger. This type of merger is not
permanent as it relates only to delegate representation for the convention
and must be completed by March 1.
Under Section 75 of the bylaws, the member, in order to vote, must be in
“good” standing, which means that all Lodge dues and assessments, if
any, must be paid to date: i.e., the date of voting. Therefore, two factors
govern the vote in the management and insurance affairs of the Society,
including all Lodge affairs:
(1) Be a beneficial member; and
(2) Be in good standing.
No restrictions can be made on voting privileges by an attendance
factor of so many meetings, with the exception of being present at the
meeting when the vote is taken.

Following the GPS
I
have to admit, I’m not very adept at using the GPS. In
fact, the only time I use it is when someone sets it up
and assigns me as the navigator. I have to watch the
arrow and be ready to instruct the driver when to turn,
but I’m not comfortable blindly following this anonymous
arrow that could possibly lead me somewhere that I don’t
want to go.
I guess I’m more of a map person – even though we
are becoming rare, there are still some of us out there. I
like to see what’s coming up and what’s between me and
my destination. As we pass through the towns that are
on the map, I feel more connected and more secure in
the fact that I am indeed going in the right direction. The
map also gives me the opportunity to expand my view of
the area I’m passing through and to see if there are any
interesting sites I might want to visit.
My reluctance to use a GPS made me realize that there
are a few other areas in my life where I am unwilling to
follow blindly. I like to get advice on situations, but then
I find myself doing more research on the subject to see
what else might be involved. This is particularly true when it
comes to financial advice. Everyone’s situation and needs
are different, and there is never a one-size-fits-all solution.
It’s always smart to visit a financial advisor when planning
your retirement, but it’s also smart to do further research on
your own. Look a little deeper into the products or methods
that are suggested, or those that are not mentioned. Blindly
handing your money over is never a good idea.
One product you’ll probably hear about when discussing retirement planning is the annuity. It’s a great savings
vehicle offered through insurance companies that provides
higher interest rates than you can find in the banks. Annuities are also tax deferred, which means they allow you
to avoid paying taxes on the interest that is being earned
until you take it out at a later date. If there is a payout to
your beneficiaries, they will receive the full amount directly,
bypassing probate. The benefits of the annuity make it
worth your while to research.
Call the SNPJ Marketing Department at 1-800-8437675, ext. 124, so we can provide you with some easy-tounderstand information on our annuity products that are
currently paying as much as 3.25 percent. We can show
you the numbers so you can see how your money will grow
through the years. When working with SNPJ, you should
never have that insecure feeling of blindly
following a little green arrow.

Uncle Sam wants your
Ljubljana (STA) — Members of
Slovenian scout troops presented the
Bethlehem Light, a symbol of the Christmas season, to parliamentary Speaker
Janko Veber in mid-December, along
with a message of peace. Veber said
he was happy that the light was again
in parliament since it demonstrates
the desire for global peace, and shows
Slovenia’s determination to create and
build its future peacefully.
According to Veber, it is characteristic
of Slovenia that its people want to live in
harmony with other nations and create
good living conditions. “Europe strongly
cherishes peacekeeping efforts, and the
Bethlehem Light is not only traveling
across Europe, but elsewhere as well,”
Veber told the representatives of several
Slovenian scouting associations.
The Bethlehem Light came to Slovenia for the 23rd year in a row. The idea
for the Peace Light from Bethlehem
originated in 1986. Each year, a child
from Austria collects the light from
the grotto in Bethlehem where Jesus is
believed to have been born. The light is
then flown to Austria, from where it is
distributed to delegations across Europe
who take it back to their own countries.
Slovenian scouts first brought the
Peace Light to Slovenia in 1991, along
with the message “Peace Is Time Without War.”
Slovenia first to create

Ljubljana (STA) — According to
a recent article published in Nature, an
acclaimed British magazine, Slovenian
scientists have succeeded in creating a
magnetic liquid crystal, becoming the
first in the world to do so after more
than 40 years of unsuccessful attempts.
Announcing the discovery in a press
release, the Jožef Stefan Institute wrote
that “scientists at the Jožef Stefan Institute, the Faculty of Mathematics and
Physics at the Ljubljana University,
and the Maribor University Faculty
of Chemistry and Chemical Technology have discovered ferromagnetism
in suspensions of magnetic platelets in
liquid crystal.”
The possibility of the existence of
such a liquid magnet was proposed by
Nobel prize winner Pierre de Gennes 43
years ago, but its discovery had proven
elusive throughout a number of attempts
by researchers to date. The success is
entirely the result of the work completed
by Slovenian scientists.
This new discovery opens numerous
possibilities, an example being optic
devices that can be steered by very small
magnetic fields as opposed to external
voltage.
Copyrights for Slovenian
musical works extended
A CENTURY
in the making
Ljubljana (STA) — In mid-December, the Slovenian National Assembly
passed legislation that extends the term
of copyright protection for performers
and sound recordings from 50 years to 70
years in accordance with EU regulations.
The amendments to the Copyright
and Related Rights Act determine that a
copyright expires 70 years after the death
of the last surviving author of the music
or lyrics of a sound recording.
The aim of the EU directive on the
term of protection of copyright and
certain related rights is to set musical
performers’ protection on equal footing
with that already granted to authors.
The government said the amendment
was aimed at bringing Slovenian law into
harmony with EU law, but said a more
comprehensive review of the nation’s
copyright legislation would be completed
next year.

Ljubljana (STA) — In late December, Slovenian President Borut Pahor
decorated the Red Cross of Slovenia with
an Order for Services for systematically
building the blood donor network across
Slovenia and for ensuring the future of
blood donations as the most massive
and noble form of solidarity in Slovenia.
“The decoration marks 60 years of
organized blood donation in Slovenia,
through which over five million people
have donated blood at least once, the
from the
source
announcement from the President’s
office reads.
“This magnificent number is proof of
the dedication of blood donors and the
determined care for their fellow man. At
the same time, it speaks of the sacrificing realization of the mission of the Red
Cross of Slovenia and the organizational
ability of its expert staff, its management, all of its 56 regional branches and
numerous others bound into the work
of this humanitarian organization,” the
announcement continues.
The President’s office also recognized
the good work of the Red Cross, noting
that five percent of Slovenian citizens
are now blood donors and the Red Cross
organizes around 1,170 donor activities
each year, of which more than 350 are
held outside blood donation centers.
The medal was received by Red Cross
president Franc Košir who told the press
that the medal meant a lot to him and
everyone else at the Red Cross. “After
all, this is the 60th anniversary [of the
Red Cross],” Košir said. “We have many
generous, humane, sympathetic people
who give blood and who help to ensure
that things run smoothly,” he added.
According to Košir, the number of
blood donors in Slovenia has been increasing over the past few years, reaching
a record total of 115,000 donors in 2011, a
number that includes many young people.
He added that Slovenia is self-sufficient in terms of blood supply and has
never run out of blood, but he expressed
his fear of blood becoming a marketable
good, a prospect he believes will only
lead to trouble. “Once blood is sold,
purchased, imported and exported, different things can be done to it and safe
blood will be hard to ensure,” Košir said.
Jesenice ER will have
army help during build
Ljubljana (STA) — During what is
expected to be a year-long construction
of a new emergency room, the Jesenice
emergency department will operate in a
Slovenian army mobile hospital facility.
Gearing up for the project, the Jesenice
Hospital and the Slovenian Defense
Ministry recently signed an agreement
on the use of the army’s mobile hospital.
The mobile unit will be set up in the
hospital parking lot and will be fully
functional by the start of the construction
project, which is expected in March. To
avoid any logistical issues, the mobile
hospital unit, named “Role 2,” will be
set up before construction begins and a
number of test runs will be performed.
Jesenice Hospital Director Igor
Horvat, who signed the agreement with
Defense Minister Roman Jakič, said the
mobile hospital unit will allow the hospital’s emergency department to function
more or less intact, and indicated that
the Defense Ministry was pleased to be
able to help.
He also said that the mobile unit was
large enough to provide appropriate accommodations for the emergency room.
Housed in a large tent, Role 2 includes an
X-ray machine, a laboratory, a pharmacy,
surgical rooms and examination rooms.
Book helps Perpetuum
Jazzile celebrate 30 years
Ljubljana (STA) — Perpetuum
Jazzile, Slovenia’s most popular acapella
group, recently launched a SlovenianEnglish book about its work as the group
celebrates its 30th anniversary. The 100page book, titled “Perpetuum Jazzile 30,”
provides insight into the choir’s past and
current work, as well as its future.
The book contains interviews with
founder Marko Tiran and current musical director Peder Karlsson, features
opinions of the group from acclaimed
musicians, and presents photos from
an extravagant concert held at Stožice
Arena in November.
“Tiran planted the seed 30 years ago.
He exposed young singers to music they
did not know before. Tomaž Kozlevčar,
musical director between 2001 and 2010,
continued in the same spirit, and so do
I,” Karlsson said during the introduction
of the self-published book.
Perpetuum Jazzile celebrated its 30th
anniversary this year with tours of the
United States and Germany. The group,
which consists of more than 50 singers,
also presented a new video of an ABBA
medley.
3
The beginnings of Perpetuum Jazzile
date back to 1983 when the group was
established with the name “Gaudeamus.”
While popular in Slovenia for a number
of years, Perpetuum Jazzile became
an international sensation when their
acappella rendition of Toto’s 1982 hit
“Africa” was uploaded onto YouTube
in 2009; that video has been viewed by
more than 14 million people since.
In 2013, Slovenians
more rational buying gifts
Ljubljana (STA) — A recent survey
by GfK Slovenija has discovered that
Slovenians have become increasingly
rational when it comes to shopping for
gifts. More and more people are deciding
to give gift cards and are very careful not
to spend more than planned on individual
gifts. An increasing number of Slovenian
consumers are also buying gifts online.
On average, gifts given during the recent holiday season were less expensive
than in previous years, and most people
spent roughly EUR 20 ($27.50) on an
individual gift. An increasing number of
people spent only EUR 10 (around $14)
on a gift, according to the survey results.
Men continue to buy slightly more
expensive gifts then women, the survey
indicates. On the other hand, the number
of people who did not give any gifts had
increased, a group that includes more men
than women. In addition, the average
Slovenian gave gifts to a fewer number
of people this year than in past years.
Cosmetics, books and toys remained
the most popular Christmas and New
Year’s gifts in Slovenia. However, the
poll suggests that many people had
become more creative and had made
several gifts themselves. Most of the doit-yourself gifts were made by women;
men continued to prefer to purchase
entertainment electronics as gifts.
An increasing number of Slovenians
purchased their holiday gifts online.
When the survey was first conducted
in 2007, only 10 percent of Slovenians
made online gift purchases. This year,
that number jumped to nearly 40 percent, according to a survey which was
conducted among Internet users between
the ages of 18 and 55.
Most Slovenians made their online
gift purchases from Slovenian websites,
but the number of those who ordered
items from foreign websites also increased. The researchers say this could
be due to increasing trust in financial
transactions abroad – however, it could
also have something to do with a warning issued by the Slovenian Consumer
Association which indicates that Slovenian online retailers are more expensive
in comparison to online retailers based
in Austria, Italy, Croatia, Hungary and
Germany.
Sava sells Bled golf
course to a foreign group
Bled (STA) — Sava Turizem has sold
the Bled golf course, the country’s oldest
and largest, to Gerrard Enterprises, the
owner of the Eligo Golf Course Group
which is headed by Serbian businessman
Dragan Solak. The deal, estimated at
$15.1 million, is expected to be followed
with the sale of the Moravske Toplice
golf course as part of the Sava Turizem
divestment strategy.
Representatives from Sava Turizem,
which is Slovenia’s largest tourism company and part of the once-mighty Sava
conglomerate, said that the decision to
sell the course was part of the company’s
strategy, which includes the sale of assets in need of additional investment.
Explaining that golf accounts for only
three percent of company revenues, Sava
Turizem announced the likely sale next
year of its course at the Moravske Toplice
spa resort, one of the six resorts owned
by Sava Turizem.
Gerrard Enterprises has announced a
renovation of the Bled course, and Sava
expects to benefit from the investment.
The Eligo Group owns 39 courses around
the world, which means new markets for
Sava Turizem, as well a positive effect
on tourism in general in and around Bled.
The Eligo Group, which plans to
keep all the employees connected with
the course, said it hopes to promote the
course as a destination for players in
the region, as well as those from Great
Britain, Western Europe and the United
States. CEO Dragan Solak has announced
the upgrade of the course will make it
appropriate for international professional
and amateur competitions.

Perpetuum Jazzile ob 30-letnici ustvarjanja tudi s knjigo
HEADLINE: A book for the Perpetuum Jazzile 30th anniversary
TOPIC: For their 30th anniversary,
the vocal group Perpetuum Jazzile
arranged a series of events and also
published the book “Perpetuum Jazzile
30” which, according to the group’s
manager and book editor Boštjan Usenik, offers insight into the past, present
and future of this vocal group.
The 100-page book contains interviews with Marko Tiran and Peder
Karlsson, the group’s founding and
current musical directors; opinions
about the vocal group from well-known
musicians; dedications; the singers’ impressions of the anniversary; and photos
from last year’s concert extravaganza,
“The Show,” performed at Stožice
Arena in Ljubljana.
“Tiran planted a seed 30 years ago.
He exposed young singers to music that
they didn’t know until then. Tomaž
Kozlevčar, the artistic director of
Perpetuum Jazzile from 2001 through
2010, has – perhaps without conscious
consideration – continued in the same
spirit, and I have done the same,” Karls-
son added.
Vokalna zasedba Perpetuum Jazzile
je ob 30. obletnici delovanja poleg vrste
dogodkov izdala tudi knjigo Perpetuum
Jazzile 30, ki po besedah managerja skupine in urednika knjige Boštjana Usenika
ponuja vpogled v preteklost, sedanjost in
prihodnost vokalne skupine.
Knjiga, ki je izšla v samozaložbi skupine, na 100 straneh vsebuje intervju z
Markom Tiranom in Pedrom Karlssonom,
ustanovnim in sedanjim glasbenim
vodjo Perpetuum Jazzile, mnenja znanih
glasbenih osebnosti o vokalni zasedbi,
posvetila in vtise pevcev ob jubileju ter
fotografije z lanskega koncertnega spektakla The Show v ljubljanskih Stožicah.
Po besedah Usenika in grafičnega
oblikovalca Saša Vrabiča so nameravali
dvojezično - slovensko in angleško - saj
skupine ...
Jazzile izraz svojega ustvarjanja premika
na novo področje. “Na nek način postaja
večna. Osebno menim, da je to največji
pomen izida knjige,” je poudaril.
Karlsson je še poudaril, da je bilo za
skupino zelo naporno lansko leto. Od septembra so se poleg intenzivnih priprav na
koncert v Stožicah učili tudi komunikacije
znotraj skupine - “kako sploh ugotoviti,
kaj bomo počeli naprej.”

Žganjekuha kot dopolnilna dejavnost na kmetiji
HEADLINE: Brandy
making as a supplemental
activity on the farm
TOPIC: At one time a
strong fruit brandy was
preferred by many, but these
days the aroma and taste are
more important. Katarina
Tomšič from Gornji Rogates near Grosuplje is one
of the rare people who has
preserved the art of making brandy from the fruits
she picks in small orchards,
which can be found at almost
every household in the neighboring villages.
The Tomšič household has
been making brandy from
a variety of fruit for many
years. Their customers prefer a brandy made of mixed
fruits. These days, brandy
isn’t consumed the way it
used to be. Most people buy
brandy to add to different
herbs or fruits which they
use on cold winter days to
get warm or, as the people
sometimes say, “for health.”
There are quite a few
farms across Slovenia where
brandy making is a supplemental activity, not only for
the purpose of additional
income, but so they can offer
brandy on various occasions.
“Besides that, homemade
liqueurs, such as nut, blueberry and lemon, can be
a very nice gift,” Tomšič
added.
Nekoč je za žganje veljalo,
da je moralo peči, danes pa
sta pomembni aroma in okus.
Katarina Tomšič iz Gornjega
Rogatca pri Grosupljem je
ena redkih, ki je v tamkajšnjih
okoliških vaseh še ohranila
žganjekuho iz pobranega sadja
iz majhnih sadovnjakov, ki
jih ima sleherna domačija. V
okoliških vaseh Šentjurja pri
Grosupljem kot tudi v številnih
drugih vaseh s sadjem krmijo
sadja. Tudi danes imajo kupci
najraje žganje iz mešanega
sadja, to je sadjevec. Žganje
se danes več ne pije tako kot
nekoč, pač pa ga več ali manj
stalni kupci kupijo nekaj litrov,
da z njim zalijejo določena
zelišča ali kakšno sadje in ga
porabljajo v mrzlih zimskih
Poleg tega so domači likerji,
kot so orehovec, borovničevec,
limonovec tudi lepo darilo.

Dolgoletni voznik bibliobusa
Franko Cergol se že 33 let štirikrat
na teden podaja na pot po vaseh
v zaledju, kamor zvestim bralcem
prinaša v izposojo najnovejše romane,
priročnike in druge knjižne poslastice,
s katerimi si krajšajo čas. Opaža, da
se mu najraje pridružijo zlasti otroci

in odrasli, medtem ko najstniki informacije verjetno iščejo prek spleta.
Če so nekoč podeželski bralci posegali po leposlovju, pa se danes časi
spreminjajo in s polic v bibliobusu najhitreje zmanjka zahtevnejše strokovno gradivo s področja računalništva,
medicine, psihologije in podobnih

in prebiranju spremnih besed knjig
dobro ve, katero bo komu priporočil.
Cergol je z ljudmi po vaseh spletel pristne odnose, zato so njegove
“službene” pripovedi vselej doživete
in zabavne. Kot tista, ko ga je v Brkinih

union members is free; only
the fees for transporting the
animals must be paid.
Idejna zasnova celostne
prenove živalskega vrta je pripravljena že pet let, a je za zdaj
videti, da se še ne bo zgodilo,
ker ni denarja.
“Celosta prenova živalskega
vrta stoji, kajti dogovor o sodelovanju in sofinanciranju med
državo in ljubljansko občino
še ni bil dosežen z nobeno od
vlad v zadnjih petih letih,”
je povedala Barbara Mihelič,
strokovna vodja mestnega
živalskega vrta.
Razložila je, da del težave
pomeni tudi večplastni značaj
živalskega vrta, ki se dotika
tako izobraževanja in turizma
kot okoljske problematike, zato
razvijajo in iščejo nove načine
financiranja ter tako vsaj na
splošno poskušajo slediti zasnovi načrtovane prenove. Med
drugim sredstva letos prvič
zbirajo tudi z delom dohodnine,
ki ga lahko vsak nameni za
splošno koristen namen.
Lansko leto je v živalskem
vrtu sicer poginilo 24 živali,
med njimi trije šimpanzi, lev,
dvogrba kamela, bela štorklja,
kokošja gos in štirje rdečevrati
kenguruji. So pa v poletnih
mesecih pridobili dva geparda,
poleg tega so podrli polovico
starega zverinjaka, kjer so bile
kletke za leve in pume, ter tam
zgradili novo, sodobno ogrado
za dva sibirska tigra, ki so ju
pripeljali konec avgusta.
Živali sicer praviloma ne
kupujejo, niti jih ne prodajajo,
izjema so le domače živali,
divjad in hišni ljubljenčki.
Ljubljanski živalski vrt je
član evropske zveze živalskih
vrtov in akvarijev, pri tej pa
so imenovani koordinatorji,
ki vodijo rodovne knjige za
ogrožene živalske vrste in
dajejo priporočila za željo
živalskih vrtov za transport in
izmenjavo živali. Menjava med
člani zveze je zato brezplačna,
plačati je treba le prevoz živali.
Živalski vrt v glavne mestu
vsako leto obišče približno
260 tisoč ljudi, večina seveda
v toplejših mesecih.
Sogovornica je pojasnila,
da čez poletje prisluženi denar
zadošča le za prezimovanje
do velike noči, šele aprila z
vstopnicami zaslužijo toliko,
da pokrijejo sprotne mesečne
stroške.

Dec. 7 annual meeting.
La Salle Lodge 2 members recall days gone by
by DELORES SPELICH
Lodge 2 Secretary
LA SALLE, Ill. — In spite
of a blustery, snowy Monday,
Lodge 2 had a successful turnout for our holiday luncheon.
Thanks to the SNPJ Home Office for the gifts and calendars
that were passed out to our
members. We enjoyed visiting
with Gene Jakse, his daughter
Leesa and son Doug, all of
whom are members.
We lost a faithful member,
Lefty Novak of De Pue, Ill., in
August, but we were pleasantly
surprised to have his son Bob
join us. Bob has moved from
Cicero, Ill., to his family home,
so hopefully he will attend
more of our activities.
Absent were regulars Chuck
and Emily Marchiori. Chuck
had two hip surgeries, and
we wish him a successful and
speedy recovery. The winners of
our door prizes were Ann Gregorich, Rudy Kovacevic, Mary
Rudzinski and Leesa Tipton.
Our sincere condolences
go out to the families of several longtime members who
passed away over the summer:
Sis. Mary Aidich of Sherman,
Ill., who outlived her policy
in 2012; Charles Ushman of
Bath, Ill.; and Dorothy Mahnich of Spring Valley, Ill. Our
condolences as well to Adele
Bucar whose sister, Phyllis
Lamchick, passed away.
During a recent meeting,
all officers agreed to stay in
their positions for 2014, with
John Ravnikar replacing Elmer
Spelich as auditor. Thank you,
members.
We reviewed a souvenir
book from the 25th anniversary
celebration of the former Lodge
573 held at the La Salle Dom,
dated April 1, 1951. The guest
speaker was SNPJ Supreme
President Joseph Culkar from
Chicago, where the SNPJ
Home Office was located at
2657 S. Lawndale Ave. Dance
music was provided by Chuck
Spelich and his orchestra.
The Lodge 573 officers at
that time were Teenie and Frank
Videgar, Jack and Ursula Brejc,
Delores and Elmer Spelich,
and Celia Udovic. Directors
were John Novak Jr., Joe Certalic, Frank Gregorich, Fred
Malgai, Tony Reminih, Frank
Struna, Matt Vogrich, Frank
Ravnikar, Tony Janko, Tony
Sotoshek and Frank Kastigar.
Reading through the business ads, we didn’t see many
names from our area anymore.
The names included Golub,
Claudnic, Grdina, Janko,
Klobuchar, Kotar, Krultz,
Majcen, Marincic, Martinjak, Meznarich, Putz, Setinz,
Udovic and Vogrich, and
the ads represented taverns,
groceries, shoe repairmen,
butchers, roofers, bakeries,
salesmen, insurance, miners,
jewelers, florists, suit makers
and cabinetry craftsmen.
Celebrating SNPJ membership anniversaries are 50-year
member Harold Hammerich
and 70-year member Elsie
Franks Stone.
The next Lodge 2 meeting
will be held Monday, March
10, beginning at 1 p.m. at
Dickinson House in Oglesby,
Ill. Happy, healthy wishes to
everyone in the new year!

A happy holiday season

countdown started: three...
two... one – and the wrapping
paper went flying! It was a
dramatic end to a wonderful
youth Christmas party.
The day started with a
gathering at Mary Queen of
Heaven Church. The children
and adults joined in the welcoming of this exciting event.
The children proceeded to the
craft tables organized by Michelle Schweiger. This year
the children made a reindeer
cupcake and an ornament of
their choice. Our helper elf,
Karen Bolka, assisted with all
of the creative ideas.
After crafts, the children
gathered near the Christmas tree where Jane Lynch
lead them in song. We had
participation from Tatiana
Ebbinger, who played her
viola. Her skill and talent
was impressive. After a few
more songs by Jane, Mary
Alyce Francis and her granddaughter, Madalaine Brown,
recited a beautiful poem
about our annual Christmas
party. It truly brought a tear
to my eye. Great job!
After bellowing in song
for a bit longer, it was time
