Issue 5 • May 2015
From the Office of the Superintendent
When you receive this issue of The Reader, we will be weeks
away from a milestone of 45 McComb High School seniors –
graduation. The day before these 45 remarkable students leave
our hallowed halls, I will sit with hundreds of parents, grandparents, family members, and friends, and watch the youngest of
my three sons walk across the stage and take his diploma from
the Board President at his high school, and step into the next
chapter of his life. While weddings and graduations have always
caused me to tear up, this year’s weddings and graduations and
other milestones have been particularly poignant. And I feel
particularly blessed to watch all that goes into the 13 years (or
more) of education to prepare students, to have a part in it, and
to especially see all that these communities put into making
those thirteen years memorable. From dance and gymnastics
and cheerleading lessons to coaching sports and leading scouts,
teaching Sunday school, volunteering at the school, keeping the
parks prepared for all of the youth activity that goes on in them,
and so much more, so many people have roles in seeing these
students through the 17, 18 or 19 years leading up to this big
day. Please join us in celebrating the role that the citizens of this
amazing community that makes up the McComb Local School
District, at our Commencement Exercises, on Sunday, May 24,
at 2:00 P.M., in the Herb Aldrich Gymnasium at McComb High
School.
I am excited to announce that Dr. Joseph Rinehart, MD, class of
1963, has been selected as McComb Outstanding Alumnus for
2015. Dr. Rinehart will be honored at the 2015 Senior
Recognition Ceremony, to be held on Friday, May 22, 2015, at 9
A.M., also in the Herb Aldrich Gymnasium. Dr. Rinehart attended The Ohio State University in microbiology, graduated with his
M.D. with honors in hematology, did an internship in medicine at
OSU Hospital, a residency in medicine at the University of
Chicago, and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at OSU

Hospital. He also served as an instructor at the OSU Medical
School during his fellowship. He did medical research, resulting
in 3 publications appearing in the Journal of Laboratory Clinical
Medicine, Transplantation, and the Annals of Internal Medicine.
His work and education would lay the basis for his outstanding
medical practice, academic appointments, hospital directorships, medical research, and publications that make him a wonderful candidate for Outstanding McComb Alumnus.
Dr. Rinehart served in the U.S. Army. Major Rinehart’s last posting prior to his honorable discharge in 1976, was at the Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research. His medical research while in
the army led to publications appearing in the Journal of Clinical
Investigation, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the
American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygeine.
To date, Dr. Rinehart has had 105 peer review publications, 103
abstracts, and 8 books and/or chapters published. While he
was Medical Director at the Scott and White Cancer Center in
Temple, Texas, it was honored as one of the US News and
World Report’s “Top 100 Cancer Hospitals.”
John and his wife Sandy visit McComb often, visiting friends and
relatives and especially enjoy golfing at Shady Acres. John continues his passion for the family farm which received the
Outstanding Cooperator Award for 2010 from the Hancock Soil
and Water Conservation District.
Congratulations to Dr. Rinehart. How inspiring for our graduates
to know they have the power and ability to do whatever they
choose in the future and can, indeed, make the world a better
place while doing it.
Until next time,
Mrs. Skilliter

Presbyterian Church – 100 Church Street, McComb. The
give-away will be held on Thursday, July 30 from 6-7:30 p.m.

Calculator Information
Any student enrolled in a math course at McComb High
School is required to have a graphing calculator. We
request that your student purchase the recommended
class model, a TI-83 PLUS or a TI-84 PLUS. Our state
required us to use a curriculum that meets the Ohio
Academic Content Standards. The curriculum we use
at McComb High School does this, and required the
use of a graphing calculator. We will be using the calculators in class nearly every day. If you have any
questions please contact the high school at
419-293-3853. Thank you for your cooperation and
support. The calculators can be purchased from office
supply stores, students who have graduated, and other
people and places. There is a limited supply at school
that can be rented out for the year if buying one is simply not possible.

Future Options Field Trip
After their return from the Washington D.C. trip, all 8th graders
traveled to Millstream to attend the Hancock County Future
Options Event. Students toured the new Millstream Facility,
located beside Findlay High School, to learn more about the
programs that are offered. Students visited the classrooms such
as Automotive Tech Prep, Cosmetology, Medical Technology,
Computer Networking and Support, Culinary Arts, and Welding
Technology. Students can opt to pursue these programs in high
school and could be prepared to get jobs upon graduation.
Some of the programs require more college classes after high
school but college credits can be earned from these classes at
a minimal cost. If students are interested in a particular program
and their grades and attendance are good, they can apply to get
into the program as soon as their sophomore year. It’s never too
early to start thinking about your future. If you have any questions or want to know more about career choices, see Mrs.
Kern.

Positive Panther Trip #2
With the conclusion of the second trimester, students got another opportunity to attend the second Positive Panther Trip to the
bowling alley in Findlay. 57 students enjoyed a morning of bowling with friends along with some refreshments to reward them
for their efforts. In order to participate on this trip, students
needed to have 93% attendance rate, no disciplinary referrals,
no more than 6 missing homework assignments, and all fines
and fees paid. A big thank you goes to Mrs. Borgelt, Mrs.
Kaufman and Mrs. Kern for attending this trip with the students.

A WHIRLWIND TOUR OF
WASHINGTON, D.C.
McComb’s eighth grade students experienced a once-in-a-lifetime
class trip to Washington, D.C. Students boarded the buses at 9:00
p.m. on Sunday, March 22, and headed out for a three-day tour of our
nation’s capital. The weather was comfortable as we trekked through
the city.
We slept (a little) on the way there, and then started out bright and
early Monday morning on our first day of a very full itinerary. Our tour
included a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where we watched the
ceremonious “Changing of the Guard.” Four of our students, Tessa
Hankin, Nathan Busler, Levi Fleckner, and Andrew Smith were selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Our tour also
included visits to such famous sites as the Capitol, Mount Vernon, the
Smithsonian museums, the Vietnam, WWII and Korean Memorials,
the National Cathedral, the Holocaust Museum, Ford’s Theater, and
the Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials.
We took in as many attractions as possible and did a lot of walking (a
total of 44,856 steps or 19.9 miles). Needless to say, no one had
trouble sleeping on the way home!
Students also had an opportunity to relax a bit and enjoy dinner and
dancing aboard a cruise ship on the Potomac River. Oh yes, they
also managed to squeeze in a little shopping and found plenty of souvenirs, too.
As a compliment to our students, our tour guides often mentioned
how pleasant it was to work with such a nice group of young people.
We also appreciate the cooperation of the parents and other adults
who chaperoned this trip.
Our gratitude is extended to all the area businesses and people who
helped us financially through their generous donations. We appreciate the efforts of the parent committees and volunteers who spent
numerous hours assisting with the fundraisers. Thank you, parents,
for allowing your children to visit our nation’s capitol.
We would also like to thank the staff members who organized and
chaperoned this trip: Sarah Simons, Pam Brown, Tracy Kaufman,
and Tim Hammersmith. Finally, thank you, Board of Education, for
allowing our students to have this educational opportunity.

Camp Michindoh
Early this spring, McComb sixth graders headed to Camp
Michindoh in Hillsdale, Michigan for a week of Outdoor
Education. While at camp, the students attended many educational classes that taught them about nature, teamwork,
survival, and history. Here are a few brief summaries of
some of their camp experiences.
Kaiya McGuire – Reptiles and Amphibians
Reptiles and Amphibians class was awesome! If you like
snakes and lizards, this class is for you! We got to learn
about how reptiles are the same, and how they are different.
We even got the chance to hold them! I learned that turtles
can’t be flipped or tilted because of the way their lungs work.
This is a class that I’ll never forget.
Reilly Sammet – Square Dance
On the last night of camp, we got to have a square dance!
The camp staff taught us a square dance that was called the
Virginia Reel. We danced all night! They had a band that
played awesome songs that really kept our feet moving. I
think everyone had an amazing time. I think it was probably
one of our best nights at camp, and I think most sixth graders would agree.
Riane Denney – Mission Possible
As sixth graders, we didn’t really know how important it is to
communicate. The group leader broke us into teams, and
each team member had a job to do. In this mission, we used
PVC pipes and joints to create the picture that the “architect”
was holding. The architect in the group had to give directions
to the foreman, and it was the foreman’s job to take that
message to the builders. Since the foreman and the builders
could only listen to directions, we learned how important it is
to communicate with our group members. This activity
taught us how important it is to work together and that communication is important.
Cayla Pitz – Archery
When we went to archery, we had to sit for a little bit to get
directions for the group leader. They showed us how to hold
the bow and how to shoot it. After that, everyone got a turn
to shoot at the targets. They showed us how to safely
retrieve our arrows, and everyone had a great time! Archery
was so much fun!
performed a skit. All of them were hilarious and really good!
We all laughed so hard! The cool thing about skit night was
that we got to see everybody’s “funny side”, even the teachers! Skit night was a great experience for everyone to work
together and just have fun.
Gabe Bell – Creepy Critters
I thought Creepy Critters was awesome! During this class,
we got to see so many creepy and disgusting creatures! A
few of the critters we got to see were beetles, cockroaches,
scorpions, and even a tarantula. The group leaders even got
some of the critters out for us to pet. The tarantula gave me
a high five, and I learned a lot!
Malorie Schroeder – Outdoor Living Skills
In the mammals class, the group leader explained all the
different types of mammals to us. I thought it was interesting
that some mammals are nocturnal and some are not. At the
end of class, we got to hold a few of the mammals that they
have at Michindoh. Sometimes they would try to crawl on our
arms and necks. We could also touch some of the pelts
(furs) that they have. Some mammals are pretty furry!
The first day at Camp Michindoh we got to go out in the
woods and learn about outdoor living skills. I think everyone
would agree that it was a really fun time! We learned how to
build a shelter using things that you can find in the woods.
We even got to build our own shelters using wood that we
found on the ground. The group leaders and teachers made
sure that our shelters were safe. Even though building shelters was fun, I’m happy we had cabins to stay in. If I could, I
would definitely take that class again.
The day was like no other day at camp. Two teams were in
an epic battle of dodge ball! The game went on forever. If
you got out, you had to sit out on the side of the gym. All of
the sudden somebody would yell, “JAIL BREAK!” When you
head that, it meant that everyone was back into the game. It
turned into a mad dash to get back in and aid your team in
the great battle. It was the most epic game of dodge ball I
have ever played in!
Pioneer Craft Fair was by far my favorite class at camp!
There were lots of activities to pick from in this class. All of
the activities let us see what it would be like to have been a
pioneer in the Ohio/Michigan area. We got to make candles,
rope belts, try pioneer cooking, churn butter, practice woodworking, learn how to throw a tomahawk, and do a craft
called a God’s eye. I can now better understand the pioneer
experience.
Skit night was one of the evening activities that we did at
Camp Michindoh. On the last day, each cabin learned and
Camp was an awesome experience for 6th grade! My favorite part was the food. Every meal had a buffet with just about
Emily Markel – Mammals
Robert Frey – Dodge Ball – Camp Style
Angel Shope – Skit Night
Lexi Shoop – Pioneer Craft Fair
Mason Pierce – Camp Food
anything you could imagine. At lunch and dinner they served
delicious desserts! During every meal, there were skits provided by a cabin to let us know the weather, and usually the
camp staff would do one too. When we were finished eating,
they would weigh our wasted food which they called “Piggy
Waste”. We got to compete against other schools that go to
camp to try to get zero pounds. When we got a zero for
“Piggy Waste”, we all got to stand up to sing and a dance a
really fun song. “We got a zero, We got a zeeerooo, we got
a Z-Z-Z, E-E-E, R-R-R, O! Huh!!”
Sam Morse – Rock Wall
An activity that we got to do at camp was the vertical rock
climbing wall. The group leaders would make us set goals
for how high we wanted to climb. I think everyone was able
to climb higher than they thought. The wall was divided into
three sections: Hard, Harder, and Hardest. The hardest wall
even had a one hundred twenty degree slant outward. The
leader taught us all how to put on a safety harness to make
sure that we were safe when we climbed. The first time I
went up, I did the worst thing you could do when climbing a
rock wall. I looked down. It felt the rocks turned into ice, and
I slipped right off the wall. Thank goodness for that harness
and break system. Even though climbing the wall was not
easy, we had a blast doing it!
Everyone had a great time and learned a lot during their time
at Camp Michindoh! Many new friendships were made, and
each student left with memories they will talk about for years
to come. Camp would not have been possible without the
help of adult volunteers who took time out of their busy
schedules to spend a week keeping order in the cabins, and
making camp the great experience it was for the sixth graders. Outdoor Education provides such a unique opportunity
for learning outside of the classroom, and these students
had an excellent experience.
